How to Write a Great Cover Letter
Your cover letter is a one page document that acts as your first introduction to an employer. You are able to elaborate on your experience listed on your resume, and relate it back to why you are good for the job. It is, quite literally, your first impression on an employer, so you want to make sure it is exactly what you want to convey about yourself.
So, what should you include? And in what order?
First, introduce the letter by explaining the reason why you are writing and give a brief idea of who you are. This should be the type of content you include in the opening paragraph.
Next, you want to relate your professional experience back to the items in the job description. In 2-3 paragraphs, expand on a few of the items on your resume that relate back to the role you are applying for. This will help aid your explanation about why you are a perfect fit for the role and organization organically. You want to make sure you tailor everything you include in the letter to the job opportunity you are pursuing. If possible, try to show that you have knowledge on the company as best as possible.
Last, you need an effective closing paragraph. It may be useful to repeat the points you touched on in the previous paragraphs. For example: "I am confident I can offer you the professional, time management, communication, and problem-solving skills you are seeking in this role." You should also indicate what supporting materials will be sent along with your application so that the employer knows and can be expecting them. The closing should include you thanking the reader for their consideration and indicating that you are looking to hear from them.
Remember, a cover letter not only highlights your accomplishments and skills, but it also reveals how effectively you communicate. Try to keep your sentence structure as concise as possible, and your tone professional.
The good news is, the more you practice this kind of writing, the easier it becomes. A great cover letter lands you one step closer to the job you've been waiting for!
